Three upcoming phones that could change everything

Three upcoming phones could redefine the smartphone in our time. As smartphones become more and more common, OEMs need to branch out and get creative.

Welcome to the evolution of the phone! Smartphones have become such a commodity these days that, frankly, it’s getting hard to come up with something new and interesting. This year, we’re getting great new displays with minimal bezels. We’re also seeing new personal assistants comings out of the woodwork. But it got us thinking that perhaps we’re already seeing the next generation of smartphone come around. Maybe the next big thing in smartphones isn’t more for everyone, it’s more for just a few. Looking ahead, there are three upcoming phones that could change everything.

These are a new crop of phones coming out, seemingly for the niche audiences out there. Those are the audiences who are looking for something a little more refined, or a little more up their specific alley. Look no further than the rumored iPhone 8/Pro/whatever, which, according to rumor (there’s that word again!), will start around $1,000, and go up from there. iPhones were status symbols for a long time, but that’s no longer the case. Perhaps, this is an attempt to bringing this back. But, you know, iPhone blah blah blah.

But on the Android side, we have some interesting phones coming up that are even more refined, even more niche. And we wanted to take a moment to talk about them.

Seeing RED

The tech space is dominated by YouTubers who are all packing high-end camera gear. And in that world, there is no higher-end than RED cameras. And RED wants to make phones too. Of course, at the moment, all we have are a couple of prototypes, only one of which we are able to see. The fit and finish prototype looks classy and sexy. The phone will be modular, with numerous snap on accessories, much like the Moto Z and the Essential phone. Presumably, this phone will cater to the high-powered film crowd and will have camera optics to match. We don’t have any specifications on that just yet, but it’s a safe bet. If you’re a camera company, you don’t make a phone with a bad camera.

Also coming to the RED Hydrogen One is its “holographic display”. YouTube’s Marques Brownlee has seen the holographic display in action, and judging by his expressions, it seems like a legit thing. What exactly it will offer is still a mystery, so it remains to be seen if it will be a gimmick, or the real deal. With a price tag starting at $1,195 and up, let’s hope it’s the latter.

Razor sharp

Not to be outdone, Razor seems to be diving into the premium phone market with a gaming device. This is the lovechild born from its acquisition of Nextbit – R.I.P. Nextbit by the way. Razor is synonymous with gaming, so it stands to reason that this device – be it a phone/tablet/Nintendo Switch competitor – should be pretty beefy, and likely pricey as well.

We can only speculate that this phone would need to have top of the line specifications across the board. Maybe a Note 8 on steroids.

Unlike the RED phone, we don’t even have a fit and finish device to look at. We can only speculate that this phone would need to have top of the line specifications across the board. Maybe a Note 8 on steroids. Everything about the phone would have to be juiced up if the focus is to be on gaming. That includes the battery – games tend to suck a battery dry faster than a selfie camera in the hands of a Kardashian. So, this would almost necessarily have to be packed to the core with premium everything, and carry with it a premium price tag.

Of course, this is the weakness of the rumor wagon – we have no idea. It’s just as possible that Razor would put out a moderately built device with some gimmicky D-Pad controls running Android 5.1. I certainly hope that isn’t the case, but we do need to pause and remind everyone that this device is, at present, non-existent.

Know when to fold ‘em

Personally, I’m positive that just about every OEM has some kind of foldable screen tech in the works

Finally, we come to the concept phones that we have heard about. Lenovo is leading the public charge to foldable devices and screens. Personally, I’m positive that just about every OEM has some kind of foldable screen tech in the works, but Lenovo has been making the most noise about it. This folding phone, the Folio – say that five times really fast – could be a bracelet/phone or a folding tablet/phone or both. Personally, this is the idea that is the most attractive to me. I’m not much of a gamer, and I have a nice camera, so this future-type tech is what gets me going.

Lenovo is the OEM that makes the most sense as well. Along with Moto Mods and ShatterShield tech, Lenovo is probably the one OEM that is pushing boundaries in the space. I’m not talking about bezels – although #BezelShrink2017 is a fun year. The idea of folding a tablet and sliding it into your pocket is such a seductive one. Plus, unlike the other phones featured here, such a device won’t necessarily be have to be high-end. It also may go a long way toward helping save the tablet from an untimely demise.

Here they come

…one man’s feature is another man’s gimmick…

The future is looking up, as they say. Now that smartphones have saturated the market and become a commodity, OEMs are forced to start pushing boundaries in order to stay relevant and ahead. Of course, that’s a slippery slope – one man’s feature is another man’s gimmick. The RED phone will almost certainly sell. The Razor phone, depending on what it is, might sell. The Lenovo folding phone will honestly be the hardest to sell, because it won’t necessarily have a target audience.

Lenovo K8 Plus with dual camera and 4,000 mAh battery launches in India

Today, Lenovo has taken the wraps off a new smartphone in India. Called the K8 Plus, it’s equipped with a 5.2-inch Full HD display and powered by the MediaTek Helio P25 chipset. It comes with 3 GB of RAM and offers 32 GB of storage that you can expand for an additional 128 GB with a microSD card.

One of the biggest features of the device is its dual-camera setup on the back. It sports 13 and 5 MP sensors, allowing you to capture those bokeh images everyone seems to love so much these days. Considering its size, the device packs quite a large battery. It has a capacity of 4,000 mAh that’s good for two days of use or up to 20 hours of video playback, the company claims. Lenovo’s latest handset also comes with Dolby Atmos audio enhancements and features a dedicated Music Key on the side, which you can remap to open an application of your choice.

Lenovo’s K series has always been known for delivering powerful performance and cutting edge multimedia experience to consumers at very affordable prices, which is why it has an installed base of more than 8 million users in the country. — Sudhin Mathur, Lenovo MBG India

Other features worth mentioning are the fingerprint scanner located on the back, a metal body, dual-SIM support, and a stock version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. In case you’ve missed it, Lenovo announced last month that it’s ditching its Vibe UI skin and will ship all of its upcoming devices with a pure version of Google’s OS. The company also guarantees that the smartphone will get upgraded to Android Oreo, although it did not mention when exactly will this happen.

Moto X4 hands-on – the center of your mobile disco

The Moto X4 is a new mid-range device from Motorola with one really compelling audio feature. Join us as we go hands-on with the Moto X4!

Motorola may have already introduced a ton of new phones this year, but the company thinks the time is ripe for yet another device. Today at IFA 2017, the Lenovo-owned company announced a new addition to the incredibly popular Moto X range, but this one takes the X series in a different direction. Join us as we go hands-on with the Moto X4.

Before we start, let’s try to answer something that’s probably on many folks’ minds. Where does the Moto X4 fit into the company’s confusing lineup? While the Moto X lineup used to be considered Motorola’s flagship smartphone line, the new X4 now sits squarely in between the high-end Moto Z2 line and the mid-range Moto G line.

The Moto X4 packs a 5.2-inch Full HD display, measures 7.99 mm thin and weighs in at 163 grams. It’s also powered by a Snapdragon 630 with either 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, or 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage depending on your market.

You’ll find the fingerprint sensor beneath the display and the power and volume keys to the right. The rear has a sleek, contoured design that shimmers in the light, along with a dual camera array that looks very similar to the Moto Z2 Force in design.

Moto X4 hands-on

The main camera features a 12 MP sensor with dual autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, and 1.4 µm pixel size, while the secondary camera is an 8 MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, 1.12 µm pixel size, and 120-degree field of view. Motorola’s Depth Detection feature allows you to add bokeh and depth of field effects to your photos, although we have not had very long to test this feature out quite yet.

The handset is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery which is accompanied by Motorola’s Turbo Charge technology to help get you back up and running when your battery runs low. What’s more, it comes with IP68 dust and water resistance to help protect you if things do go wrong. Motorola has also brought Amazon’s Alexa to the device.

So far, we’ve basically been rattling off specs that you can find in many other mid-tier handsets. But the X4 does stand out thanks to one new feature: a new Wireless Sound System that’s powered by French startup Tempow which allows your phone to truly become the centerpiece of your very own mobile disco.

There is one standout feature that allows your phone to truly become the centerpiece of your very own mobile disco

Utilizing the hardware stack and system access, Tempow’s software allows you to play music simultaneously on up to four Bluetooth-powered devices. The software is baked into the OS on the Moto X4, which means it connects and streams to any Bluetooth device, new or old, as long as it has the A2DP music profile or equivalent.

Moto X4 hands-on

For those who want to listen to audio on multiple devices at once, the Moto X4 could be the phone for you

Thanks to the company working directly with Motorola, Tempow has been able to add custom shortcuts to the settings menu. In the phone’s settings, you’ll find the ability to set speakers as the left, right, or both channels, as well as the ability to tweak audio profiles on a per-device basis. When you adjust the volume via the phone’s volume button, there’s also an option to adjust the volume for each connected device. Why would you want to do this? Maybe you want to have a bass-heavy speaker lower than a pair of headphones that prioritizes the mids and the highs.

For those who want to listen to audio on multiple devices at once, the Moto X4 could be the phone for you. Tempow is actually in talks to partner with other manufacturers in the near future, too, as it requires system access and swapping out of drivers. The company doesn’t plan to launch the feature as a standalone app, at least not for now.

Tempow partnership aside, the Moto X4 is a phone that blends into the crowd a little too much. It’s not the most unique looking device on the market, though the wireless surround system is a feature that’s not on any other device, at least for now. Simply put, Tempow is the best feature in an otherwise unexciting phone.

Moto X4 is finally here: a mid-range handset with one killer audio feature

Motorola has officially unveiled the Moto X4 at IFA 2017: find out what it has to offer here.

The Moto X4, the latest handset from Motorola, has just been announced at IFA 2017.The new device had been the subject of a truck load of leaks over the past few weeks, though surprisingly the device’s standout feature didn’t break cover. Here’s what you need to know about the Moto X4.

Don’t miss: Moto X4 hands-on – the center of your mobile disco

The Moto X line goes mid-range

The device sports a glass and metal design with a flat face and curved rear, measuring 148.35 x 73.4 x 7.99 mm and weighing 163 grams. It packs a 5.2-inch, Full HD LCD display, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor with Adreno 508 GPU.

As for memory, the X4 will comes with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage or with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. A 3,000 mAh non-removable battery will keep the X4 chugging along, and it utilizes Motorola’s TurboCharging tech for short charging times. It also comes with a front-mounted fingerprint scanner and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Wireless Sound System lets you play music simultaneously on up to four Bluetooth devices

Powered by French startup Tempow, the Moto X4’s new Wireless Sound System software allows you to play music simultaneously on up to four Bluetooth-powered devices. The software is baked into the OS on the Moto X4, which means it connects and streams to any Bluetooth device, new or old, as long as it has the A2DP music profile or equivalent. We have much more information on this feature in our hands-on post, which you can find right here.

Motorola finally makes a water-resistant smartphone

There are a few companies out there that have been pretty far behind the trend when it comes to waterproofing, and one of them is Motorola. Even the company’s shatter-proof Moto Z2 Force handset only features a “water-repellent nano-coating”, which only protects against accidental spills, splashes, or light rain.

Finally, finally, Motorola has made a water-resistant smartphone. That’s right — the Moto X4 comes with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance!

Dual cameras that sound very promising

The back of the X4 is home to a 12 and 8 MP dual-camera setup, featuring a main camera with dual autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, and 1.4 µm pixel size, while the 8 MP snapper comes with a wide-angle lens (for a 120-degree field of view), f/2.2 aperture and 1.12 µm pixel size. This setup includes a dual-LED flash, Phase Detection Autofocus and additional depth of field effects (similar to what the Moto Z2 Force offers).

On the front is a 16 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1.0 µm pixel size which, according to Motorola, should provide for superior selfies in low-light selfies, and arrives with an Adaptive Low Light mode specifically for this. The front camera can also shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second or 1080p video at 60 frames per second.

Motorola’s software is hard to beat, even if it’s not Oreo.

It will run Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box (an update to Android 8.0 Oreo somewhere down the line is almost guaranteed, though). Like the other handsets in the Moto series, the X4 will also come with Moto Actions, Moto Display, and Moto Voice software features. In addition, the phone will offer a “quick screenshot” mode that’s enabled by placing three fingers on the screen at once.

The first Moto X phone without Moto Maker

We’ve already talked at length about how Motorola ditching Moto Maker is upsetting, but it still needs to be brought up here. When Lenovo bought Motorola, the new parent company axed the Moto Maker program as we knew it and temporarily retired the Moto X line. Now the Moto X is back, but without the wonderful customization options we once got with other X-line devices.

However, the device will be available in Super Black and Sterling Blue color options.

All of the above was pretty much in line with previous leaks, but what we hadn’t yet gotten our hands on was the Moto X4 price and release date information. Motorola said that the Moto X4 will go on sale in Europe this September for €399, with a global launch set for later this fall. We don’t have any other pricing or availability details yet, but we’ll of course let you know when we learn more.

Lenovo’s Home Assistant Pack mounts an Alexa-powered speaker to your 4-series tablet

Lenovo is launching a new Home Assistant Pack which breathes new life and functionality into their Tab 4-series line of tablets.

Back at CES 2017 Lenovo showed off a number of Alexa-powered smart speakers which looked like the love-child of an Amazon Echo and Google Home. While it was enticing to have more options to choose from when looking for a standalone smart speaker, it seems Lenovo has taken the concept and added a specialized dock attachment for its 4-series tablets.

The Lenovo Home Assistant Pack is a special dock which mounts 4-series tablets and turns them into smart speaker assistants with a screen. With a male USB Type-C port jutting out the side, you just need to slide your Tab 4 tablet into the port and it should automatically switch to the smart assistant interface.

In a way, the Home Assistant Pack helps to transform your tablet into a beefed-up Echo Show, which is pretty sweet granted you already have one of Lenovo’s Tab 4-series tablets

The mount has a three-watt speaker which helps to boost the audio from your tablet, and should get just as loud as a standalone Amazon Echo device. In a way, the Home Assistant Pack helps to transform your tablet into a beefed-up Amazon Echo Show, which is pretty sweet granted you already have one of Lenovo’s Tab 4-series tablets. In fact, with the Home Assistant Pack only costing $69.99 and the tablets costing as low as $129.99, you can get a pretty sweet modular Echo with a screen for just about $200, which is still cheaper than Amazon’s own Echo Show which retails for $220.

Lenovo is also offering two different accessory packs to buy with your Home Assistant Pack.

The first is the Kids Pack, which comes with a shock-resistant bumper, a blue-light filter, and a pair of colorful 3M stickers. You can also put the tablets into Kids mode, which loads up a number of child-friendly apps as well as a dedicated Lenovo kids account.

The second pack is the productivity pack, which comes with a Bluetooth keyboard case and special productivity interface. This should be great for those that want to use their tablet for work on the go and as their virtual assistant when they get home.

The Lenovo Home Assist Pack will be available for $69.99 USD starting at the beginning of October.

Use a lightsaber and an AR headset in Lenovo’s new Star Wars: Jedi Challenges experience

The game uses a special smartphone-powered AR headset, along with a lightsaber controller, to turn you into a Jedi Knight.

This post originally appeared on our sister site, VRSource.com.

Let’s face it: the minute you saw Star Wars for the first time, you wanted to become a Jedi Knight. While the real world may not have Force powers, Lenovo is teaming up with Lucasfilm and its parent company Disney to give anyone a chance to become as close to a Jedi Knight as they can. Today, as part of IFA 2017, Lenovo announced Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, a new smartphone-based augmented reality experience that’s due for release sometime this holiday for $199.

Lenovo has created a custom AR headset for Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, along with a Lightsaber Controller, which is designed to look like Luke’s lightsaber. Finally, there’s a tracking beacon, which is placed on the floor and tracks the AR headset’s movements with its cameras.

Users will then download the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges app on their smartphone and put the phone inside the Lenovo Mirage AR headset. The lightsaber will let users navigate the app’s user interface, with all of its controls handled with a two-button configuration. Here’s a brief snippet from the game’s description:

Players will hone their Jedi talents across a variety of augmented reality-based experiences, each offering multiple levels of deep and immersive gameplay. To guide the player on this journey, Jedi Challenges will introduce an all-new Star Wars character, the Archivist. The Archivist instructs players in the ways of the Force and the knowledge of the Jedi. Throughout these challenges, users will train to perfect their lightsaber skills by taking on some of the most menacing villains the dark side has to offer, command armies in combat missions to defeat the Empire, and outwit their opponents in Holochess, all in augmented reality.

The truth is, buying an AR headset, a custom controller, and a beacon to play just one game for $199 is going to be a challenge all by itself for consumers. We will have to see if the game is going to be worth that price. When it does go on sale, it will be available to buy via Lenovo’s web site, along with Best Buy.

The Moto X4 might be announced on September 2

Motorola Philippines has announced that it’s holding an event on September 2, and it looks like the Moto X4 might make an appearance.

Moto X4 Leak Android Authority

We have heard quite a few rumors regarding the Moto X4 in the last couple of months and are waiting patiently for Lenovo to finally take the wraps off the device. It looks like we won’t have to wait much longer before that happens, as the handset just might launch on September 2.

Motorola Philippines will be hosting an event that day and, based on the promo image it posted on Facebook, the Moto X4 is expected to make an appearance. Although the image doesn’t specifically mention the handset, it does have the “hellomoto X” text at the bottom which leads us to believe that the X4 will be revealed. See for yourself below.

Of course, there’s a chance that Lenovo will actually announce the smartphone at IFA in Berlin before hand, so the event in the Philippines might just be to introduce the smartphone in the country. Remember that Lenovo has a press conference scheduled for August 31 at Europe’s largest tech show. Nothing has been confirmed at this point, so things can go either way.

IFA Berlin, Europe’s largest technology trade show, is scheduled to take place between September 1 and September 6, 2017. Hundreds of tech companies will be present at the event, which, every year, is the venue for numerous products launches.

We’re still a couple weeks away from IFA 2017 and only a few companies have shared specific details regarding exactly which devices will be revealed at the show. However, we can make some educated guesses based on what was announced last year and the latest rumors that are making the rounds right now.

Samsung at IFA 2017

Early reports about the Galaxy Note 8 release date suggested Samsung would go back to Berlin to launch the new S Pen device. However, it turns out the Galaxy Note 8 will keep up with its predecessors and launch in August in New York instead.

Make no mistake, though. The new Note 8 will be one of the major attractions of IFA 2017, even if it actually launches a few days before the trade show opens its doors. For most people, IFA will be the first occasion to see the Note 8 in real life, and interest in the device will be sky-high. Following the disastrous recall of the Note 7, Samsung really needs to nail the new entry in the series.

Samsung won’t announce the Note 8 at IFA, but the company’s large stable of devices means that there probably will be something new to talk about. Leaks point to a new wearable, the Gear Fit 2 Pro, which will feature five atmosphere water resistance, offline music playback and more.

There was also talk of a Bixby-enabled pair of wireless earbuds, similar to Apple’s Airpods. It would certainly make sense for this product to launch along the Gear Fit Pro 2, but Samsung may decide to unveil it along the Note 8 instead.

Another thing worth mentioning is a possible reveal of a Bixby-powered speaker that will go head to head with the Amazon Echo, Google Home, and others. We have heard a few rumors about the device recently, so we do know that it’s coming. However, based on the fact that the development of the English version of Bixby is taking longer than expected, Samsung just might launch it at a later date, possibly even in 2018.

LG at IFA 2017

Last year, LG didn’t announce any new smartphones at IFA. It looks like things might be quite different this year. The company will show off the LG V30 at the show in Berlin. LG will officially announce the device during an event taking place one day before IFA officially kicks off, on August 31.

This will be the first time that LG takes the wraps off a V series smartphone at Europe’s largest consumer electronics trade show. Although both the V10 and V20 were announced in September (2015 and 2016), the former made its debut in New York, while the latter was revealed at a press event in San Francisco. So why the change? Well, for one, the V30 will actually be available in Europe, unlike the V10 and V20, so it makes sense to show it off in Germany.

The LG V30 is expected to be a high-end device that will go head to head with the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 and other phablets. It’s expected to feature an OLED display, the latest Snapdragon 835 chipset, a dual-camera setup on the back, a new ESS Quad DAC, and will be available in three storage variants: 32, 64, and 128 GB.

Unlike its predecessor, the V30 won’t have a removable battery, likely because it will be resistant to water and dust. It will reportedly be quite different than the V20 in terms of design and is expected to look a lot like the G6. To learn more about it, check out our LG V30 rumor roundup post.

Sony at IFA 2017

Sony is expected to reveal quite a few new smartphones in Berlin. The company has already announced that its press conference will take place on August 31, a day before IFA officially starts.

According to rumors out of China, Sony might take the wraps off a bezel-less smartphone. It is expected to feature a 6-inch LCD display with 18:9 aspect ratio, similar to what we’ve already seen on the LG G6. Despite the fact that Sony is known for making smartphones that have large bezels, the rumor just might be true. The reason for this is that display manufacturer JDI, a joint venture comprised of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi has already started mass-producing a “Full Active” QHD display with thin bezels. The technology is already there, so it would make sense that Sony would be the first company to use it commercially.

In addition to the bezel-less smartphone, we have also heard rumors about three upcoming Sony devices called the Xperia X1, XZ1, and the XZ1 Compact. These just might be revealed at IFA as well, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The XZ1 will reportedly be a high-end smartphone with a 5.2-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 835 chipset, and 4 GB or RAM. The XZ1 Compact is expected to feature similar hardware but will sport a smaller display measuring 4.6-inches. The Xperia X1, on the other hand, is said to be a mid-range device that will come with a 5-inch Full HD display, the Snapdragon 660 chipset, and 4 GB of RAM.

Huawei at IFA 2017

Unfortunately, the rumor mill has been pretty dry when it comes to the devices that Huawei might reveal at IFA. At last year’s show, the company took the wraps off the Nova and Nova Plus. Their successors — Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus — have already been announced in May, but they aren’t available in Western markets yet. It’s therefore quite possible that the company will officially launch the two devices in Europe at IFA.

We probably won’t see any high-end smartphones announced by Huawei in Berlin, as the flagship P10 series was revealed in February, while the upcoming Mate 10 phablet is due to make its debut a couple of months after IFA, just like its predecessor.

HTC at IFA 2017

Back in February, HTC announced that it only plans to release six or seven smartphones this year. These will either be mid-range or high-end devices, as the company doesn’t plan on launching any entry-level smartphones — the competition is too fierce and the profit margins are too thin to justify the effort.

Three of HTC’s 2017 phones have already been revealed — U11, U Play, and U Ultra — which means we’re expecting to see three or four more by the time 2017 comes to an end. A few of them (probably not all) just might be shown off at IFA in Berlin.

As of now, we only have a couple of details about one of the upcoming devices, the HTC U11 Life, also known as the Ocean Life. According to LlabTooFeR, it will feature a 5.2-inch display with Full HD resolution and will be powered by the Snapdragon 660 chipset. The smartphone will be equipped with two 16 MP cameras (front and rear), pack a 2,600 mAh battery, and run Android 7.1.1 Nougat with HTC’s Sense 9.0 on top.

If the Ocean Life sees the light of day before September, HTC will likely announce one of the other smartphones it has in the pipeline. The company has unveiled quite a few new devices at IFA over the last few years, and we think that this trend will continue in 2017. Last year, for example, it showed off the One A9s.

Lenovo at IFA 2017

Lenovo is the second company that has announced the date of its IFA press conference. Just like Sony, and possibly also LG, the company will reveal new devices on August 31, a day before Europe’s largest tech show officially opens its doors.

As of now, there’s no word on which Lenovo products will see the light of day. But based on last year, we can expect to see quite a few of them. At IFA 2016, the company unveiled the K6 series of smartphones, the Moto Z Play, the Yoga Book ultrabook, as well as a convertible touchscreen laptop called the Yoga 910.

This year, Lenovo just might announce the successors to the K6 series along with new convertible laptops and ultrabooks. However, we probably won’t see any Moto smartphones at the event. The Moto Z Play successor has already been announced in June, the Moto Z2 and Z2 Force are both already official, and the Moto X4 is due on August 24.

Final thoughts

In addition to the ones mentioned above, we’ll obviously see a lot of other tech companies at IFA in Berlin as well. Among these are Acer, Asus, ZTE, and Alcatel, just to name a few. All of them are expected to announce a bunch of new products, but as we’re still a few months away from IFA, there’s no word on what exactly can we expect to see.

Moto X4 Leak Android Authority

Motorola has been releasing a bunch of phones this year but the device many have arguably been waiting for, is a new addition to the Moto X range. Seemingly dropped in favor of the Moto Z range, the Moto X hasn’t had a new addition since 2015 but we can now confirm that Motorola is working on a new handset in the X range. Earlier we saw seemingly sketchy images of the handset leak but thanks to an exclusive source, we can now confirm all the details around Motorola’s upcoming mid-range flagship.

The Moto X4 will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection and will be available in either Super Black or Sterling Blue, while measuring in at 148.35 x 73.4 x 7.99 mm and weighing in at 163 grams. There’s going to be four global variants in total with subtle differences between each model but all should be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor and Adreno 508 GPU. In Europe, North America and Latin America, the handset will come with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, while in the Asia Pacific region, the Moto X4 will come with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.

Beneath the display, we’ve got the fingerprint sensor while above the display, as rumoured, is the 16MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1.0µm pixel size, which Motorola says is designed for ultra low-light selfies and will come with an Adaptive Low Light mode. This camera is capable of shooting 4k video at 30 frames per second or Full HD video at 60 frames per second.

On the back, the Moto X4 has a contoured design on its glass back and based on the renders, it should shimmer rather nicely when held in the light. Also on the back is the dual camera, which sees a 12MP main camera with dual autofocus, f/2.0 aperture and 1.4µm pixel size paired with an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, 1.12µm pixel size and 120° field of view. The camera comes with dual-LED flash, Phase Detection Autofocus and the ability to add depth of field effects, like most other dual camera devices (including the Moto Z2 Force below).

The entire package will be powered by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery that also comes with Motorola’s TurboCharging feature, which Motorola says will offers hours of power off just minutes of charge. The Moto X4 will come with Moto Actions, Moto Display and Moto Voice, which are all features that are available across the range of Motorola devices and offer additional features. It’s unknown whether all of these features will come to the Moto X4 but it’s likely several of these will. The Moto X4 will also be IP68 dust and water resistant, offering additional protection for those with butter fingers.
