‘Upgrade’ your phone with an iPhone-style notch using this app

Smartphone upgrader 2017 is a simple app that adds a notch on top of your device’s screen to make it look like the Essential Phone or the new iPhone.

hack instagram password

The Essential Phone has a different take on bezel-less design than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30. The device features a notch on top that houses the camera, with the screen wrapping around it. Apple took things to a new level with the iPhone X, which features an even larger notch where in addition to the camera you’ll also find the speaker and a few other things.

Developer Damian Piwowarski decided it would be fun to bring the notch to other Android devices as well, so he created an app called Smartphone upgrader 2017. It’s extremely simple, as all it does is add a notch on top of your screen as well as rounded corners to make your smartphone look like the Essential Phone or the new iPhone. You also have the option of changing the size of the notch to make the whole thing look as pretty as possible. Check out what the end result looks like below.

Of course, the app isn’t the most useful thing in the world, and you might delete it after a few minutes. But it’s fun to try out and can be quite entertaining thanks to the remix of the song What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes that starts playing as soon as the transformation is complete.

T-Mobile unlimited throttling limit is now 50 GB per month

The self-proclaimed Un-carrier is increasing its “fair usage threshold” or throttling limit from 32 GB to 50 GB starting later this week.

For those of you on T-Mobile’s unlimited plan, we bring you good news: the self-proclaimed Un-carrier is increasing its “fair usage threshold” or throttling limit from 32 GB to 50 GB starting later this week.

T-Mobile ONE family plans now include free Netflix (Update: now live!)

The magenta network has been very generous in its customer appreciation programs, giving out free movie tickets, ice cream, high-end phones, and even luxury vacation packages. In fact, it once gave away so much free pizza that it quite literally broke Domino’s. T-Mobile recently caused a stir once again by offering free Netflix to T-Mobile ONE customers on a family plan.

Well, free Netflix subscriptions mean increased data consumption, so naturally, the Un-carrier has decided to increase its unlimited throttling limit to 50 GB. While details are scarce, from what looks to be a leaked internal document, T-Mobile will be increasing its “fair usage threshold” – just a euphemism for data throttling limit – from 32 GB to 50 GB, starting September 20.

If you were unaware, just like all other major US carriers, T-Mobile throttles your network speed once you reach a certain threshold even if you are on one of its unlimited plans. That limit used to be 23 GB, which eventually went up to 32 GB, and now, you have an extra 18 GB until you have to worry about slowed network speeds. While 50 GB is still not truly unlimited, it’s good to see that T-Mobile is continuing to be a disruptive force in the US telecommunications industry. After all, it’s been a leading player in rendering two-year contracts obsolete in the US and in pushing for affordable unlimited plans. And according to OpenSignal’s bi-annual speed report, T-Mobile now has the fastest LTE download speed in the US out of all four major carriers.

It’s good to see that T-Mobile is continuing to be a disruptive force in the US telecommunications industry.

Pressing a phone number or email address in Gmail or Inbox now opens the corresponding app

Gmail and Inbox now turn information like phone addresses and locations into hyperlinks that folks can click through to the corresponding app.

As weird as it might sound, I did not give much attention to the fact that emails I receive in Gmail did not parse out information like phone numbers and email addresses. I just took it for granted that copying and pasting was the route to go. Now that Google updated Gmail and Inbox  to make that information actionable, however, things look to be more convenient for me with future emails.

As previously mentioned, Gmail and Inbox now turn phone numbers, physical addresses, and email addresses into hyperlinks that take you to the appropriate app. For example, pressing on a phone number takes you to your default dialer, pressing on a physical address takes you to Google Maps, and pressing on an email address opens your default email client.

According to Google, it turns this information into hyperlinks in order to make your time more productive:

Precious time can be lost by having to copy and paste this information from an email into other apps and websites, so we wanted to provide a better way to perform these tasks that also saves time.

If the feature sounds familiar, that is because Android Oreo incorporates a similar feature that takes advantage of machine learning, but it requires the update to Oreo. With this, folks who use Gmail and Inbox across different Android versions can take advantage of it.

The Moto G4 Plus will get Android Oreo after all

The Moto G4 Plus will be upgraded to Android Oreo despite indications to the opposite. Check out Motorola’s statement and how long the update will take.

Motorola has taken to its blog to share news about the Android Oreo update for the Moto G4 Plus. An issue popped when Motorola published the list of phones it planned to upgrade and there was no mention of the Moto G4 Plus. Owners were promised upgrades to both Android N and O in promotional material and were understandably pretty annoyed. Motorola has removed any mention of Android O from the G4 Plus’ page, but it seems like it’ll be updated anyway.

Added at the end of its blog post is the following statement:

Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

Motorola is claiming that the inclusion of Android O was a mistake, but it’s going to update it anyway. This is a fantastic move by Motorola. Even if it’ll take longer for the G4 Plus to be updated than its siblings, an update is coming and that’s a win. While many don’t expect multiple years of software updates for cheaper devices, it’s rare to actually hear a manufacturer say that.

Three upcoming phones that could change everything

Three upcoming phones could redefine the smartphone in our time. As smartphones become more and more common, OEMs need to branch out and get creative.

Welcome to the evolution of the phone! Smartphones have become such a commodity these days that, frankly, it’s getting hard to come up with something new and interesting. This year, we’re getting great new displays with minimal bezels. We’re also seeing new personal assistants comings out of the woodwork. But it got us thinking that perhaps we’re already seeing the next generation of smartphone come around. Maybe the next big thing in smartphones isn’t more for everyone, it’s more for just a few. Looking ahead, there are three upcoming phones that could change everything.

These are a new crop of phones coming out, seemingly for the niche audiences out there. Those are the audiences who are looking for something a little more refined, or a little more up their specific alley. Look no further than the rumored iPhone 8/Pro/whatever, which, according to rumor (there’s that word again!), will start around $1,000, and go up from there. iPhones were status symbols for a long time, but that’s no longer the case. Perhaps, this is an attempt to bringing this back. But, you know, iPhone blah blah blah.

But on the Android side, we have some interesting phones coming up that are even more refined, even more niche. And we wanted to take a moment to talk about them.

RED Hydrogen prototype phone gets shown off in new video

Seeing RED

The tech space is dominated by YouTubers who are all packing high-end camera gear. And in that world, there is no higher-end than RED cameras. And RED wants to make phones too. Of course, at the moment, all we have are a couple of prototypes, only one of which we are able to see. The fit and finish prototype looks classy and sexy. The phone will be modular, with numerous snap on accessories, much like the Moto Z and the Essential phone. Presumably, this phone will cater to the high-powered film crowd and will have camera optics to match. We don’t have any specifications on that just yet, but it’s a safe bet. If you’re a camera company, you don’t make a phone with a bad camera.

Also coming to the RED Hydrogen One is its “holographic display”. YouTube’s Marques Brownlee has seen the holographic display in action, and judging by his expressions, it seems like a legit thing. What exactly it will offer is still a mystery, so it remains to be seen if it will be a gimmick, or the real deal. With a price tag starting at $1,195 and up, let’s hope it’s the latter.

Razor sharp

Not to be outdone, Razor seems to be diving into the premium phone market with a gaming device. This is the lovechild born from its acquisition of Nextbit – R.I.P. Nextbit by the way. Razor is synonymous with gaming, so it stands to reason that this device – be it a phone/tablet/Nintendo Switch competitor – should be pretty beefy, and likely pricey as well.

We can only speculate that this phone would need to have top of the line specifications across the board. Maybe a Note 8 on steroids.

Unlike the RED phone, we don’t even have a fit and finish device to look at. We can only speculate that this phone would need to have top of the line specifications across the board. Maybe a Note 8 on steroids. Everything about the phone would have to be juiced up if the focus is to be on gaming. That includes the battery – games tend to suck a battery dry faster than a selfie camera in the hands of a Kardashian. So, this would almost necessarily have to be packed to the core with premium everything, and carry with it a premium price tag.

Of course, this is the weakness of the rumor wagon – we have no idea. It’s just as possible that Razor would put out a moderately built device with some gimmicky D-Pad controls running Android 5.1. I certainly hope that isn’t the case, but we do need to pause and remind everyone that this device is, at present, non-existent.

Know when to fold ‘em

Personally, I’m positive that just about every OEM has some kind of foldable screen tech in the works

Finally, we come to the concept phones that we have heard about. Lenovo is leading the public charge to foldable devices and screens. Personally, I’m positive that just about every OEM has some kind of foldable screen tech in the works, but Lenovo has been making the most noise about it. This folding phone, the Folio – say that five times really fast – could be a bracelet/phone or a folding tablet/phone or both. Personally, this is the idea that is the most attractive to me. I’m not much of a gamer, and I have a nice camera, so this future-type tech is what gets me going.

Lenovo is the OEM that makes the most sense as well. Along with Moto Mods and ShatterShield tech, Lenovo is probably the one OEM that is pushing boundaries in the space. I’m not talking about bezels – although #BezelShrink2017 is a fun year. The idea of folding a tablet and sliding it into your pocket is such a seductive one. Plus, unlike the other phones featured here, such a device won’t necessarily be have to be high-end. It also may go a long way toward helping save the tablet from an untimely demise.

Here they come

…one man’s feature is another man’s gimmick…

The future is looking up, as they say. Now that smartphones have saturated the market and become a commodity, OEMs are forced to start pushing boundaries in order to stay relevant and ahead. Of course, that’s a slippery slope – one man’s feature is another man’s gimmick. The RED phone will almost certainly sell. The Razor phone, depending on what it is, might sell. The Lenovo folding phone will honestly be the hardest to sell, because it won’t necessarily have a target audience.

The Chromecast is one of Google’s most underappreciated products

Google’s Chromecast has received stunning reviews since it was first launched, but we think it deserves a little more love for a number of reasons.

$35. Yes, $35 is all it takes to transform your TV from ad-ridden randomized content to a user-controlled service monster on the fly.

hack instagram app

The first Chromecast launched over four years ago, but the line of products has made quite an impression on the direction of content today. No longer are you limited to watching content on whatever device you were already using at the time; Google’s Chromecast lets you you can cast Netflix, HBO, and even Chrome tabs to any display with an HDMI port.

It’s a pretty big deal when you stop to think about it. Just few stop and actually do. So why do I think the Google Chromecast is so underappreciated? Stick with me as I dive into the reasons I love this product.

Portability / Versatility

The ability to move content around your house on the fly has changed the way a lot of the industry thinks about streaming. Though Netflix played a huge part in shifting our services towards a streamed-first, physical copy second kind of world, Google’s dongle works cohesively to bring you content in whatever location is most ideal for you. Whether it be the couch, your bed, or even your attic, Google’s got your back to allow you to enjoy your favorite content wherever you are.

I personally carry around a Chromecast with me everywhere I go, because it is just so incredibly easy to use. Simply plug it in to any TV’s HDMI port and USB Type-A port and you’re ready to stream. The Chromecast is great for parties, hotels, or wherever you’ve got a HDMI-capable panel. It really is a powerful little machine.

Google’s got your back to allow you to enjoy your favorite content wherever you are.

Your phone is the remote

Some people may disagree with me on this, but I personally think using your phone as a TV remote is the best idea ever. We all keep our phones on us pretty much all the time, and unless you’re the type who constantly misplaces your device, you’ll always be able to toss up some content from YouTube, Netflix, or even Spotify.

This also makes the Chromecast great for parties or multi-person viewings. Because it uses Wi-Fi to stream all the content you’ll be viewing, anyone on the same network can take control and switch to something else. I’ve spent countless hours on the couch with friends flipping between YouTube videos, and the ability to cast tabs lets me display articles or even interesting images from the web. Pretty nifty.

Setup is a breeze

Google took a huge leap forward when they introduced the Google Home, Google Wifi, and the Chromecast Ultra last year. Each of the separate services were brought together under one big umbrella of the “Home” app. This app covers just about every Google hardware product you can get your hands on and offers consistent, easy to set up processes with beautiful animations and features like autofill.

Since the app is so easy to use, it’s simple to bring your Chromecast everywhere you go. Simply plug it in to the TV and the Chromecast should discover the Wi-Fi networks available in your area. If your phone is connected to this same network it will even autofill the password for you. How easy is that?

If you want a quick breakdown of how to set it up, here’s how you do it.

  1. Plug in your Chromecast to your TV’s HDMI port.
  2. Download the Google Home app, and it will prompt you for setup.
  3. Use your phone to connect the Chromecast to your Wi-Fi, and it should update to the latest version.

After this you’ll be ready to cast. Just look for the Google Cast icon in most Google apps and other apps like Spotify and Netflix.

You can also cast individual tabs in Google Chrome, meaning you’ll be able to show whatever you want on your TV. If you’re reading a good article and want to show your friends, just tap the “Cast” button under Chrome’s hamburger menu in the top right corner and you’ll be good to go.

If you still need some help setting it up, be sure to check out our step-by-step guide for clear instructions!

Value

At $35, the Chromecast is an absolute catch. Though Google’s other hardware products such as the Google Home and Google Pixel have received equally as positive reviews, $35 to streamline your content and make it easy to share is worth every penny. Not only that, but it goes on sale for $25 or less very, very often.

Competing options like the Amazon Fire TV and Roku offer streaming services as well, but the Chromecast is the only product that allows you to stream almost anything from just about any device. And at a lower price than almost every competing option on the market, it’s hard not to give the Chromecast a little love.

4K is awesome on the Chromecast Ultra

Ok, so the Chromecast Ultra isn’t $35. It actually retails for $69.99. And while that might seem a little pricey, the quality of the Chromecast Ultra’s 4k streaming is fantastic. While many would argue that the Ultra doesn’t provide the same value as the original Chromecast, others would beg to differ.

$70 is a respectable price to be able to take full advantage of your new 4k TV. And while that TV more than likely has a number of content apps built in, they probably can’t stream at the same quality as the Chromecast Ultra. Wi-Fi too slow? The Ultra can help with that too, and offers an ethernet port for those who would prefer to plug their device directly into the router or phone jack.

I probably don’t need to convince you why this device is so darn good, but after using it for an extended period of time, I wonder how I ever Google’d without it.

Have you tried a Chromecast? Do you own one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and be sure to tell us what you think Google’s best product is!

Huawei Pay might cross the Atlantic and make its way to the US

There’s a chance that Huawei will announce its mobile payment service for the US later this year, but an early 2018 debut is also in the cards.

It’s been a year since Huawei announced its own mobile payment service that crosses paths with the likes of Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and others, but it has remained a China-exclusive service since the announcement. News hit the wire that this could change with a launch in Europe, and now we’re learning the same could happen in the US in the near future.

hack instagram app

Huawei filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and though the application was accepted, it has not yet been examined. According to the language used in the application page for Huawei Pay, the USPTO has up to three months to investigate, which means we could see the mobile payment service launch by year’s end.

There are a few possibilities here, the first being that Huawei could launch its mobile payment service alongside a certain AI-centric smartphone that could eventually make its way to the US. This hinges on when the Mate 10 will launch in the country, and if the Mate 9’s US availability is any baseline, that launch could happen in early 2018.

There also exists the possibility that Huawei Pay for the US could be announced on its own, but given Huawei’s relative lack of presence in the market, it might be smarter to have the mobile payment service launch alongside some hardware.

Listen to the Mi MIX 2’s designer talk about Xiaomi’s new bezel-less phone

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is as much art as it is a phone. The world-renowned designer, Philippe Starck, tells the story of his inspiration for the design.

Xiaomi has just released a new video featuring both Industrial Designer Philippe Starck and CEO Lei Jun talking about the brand new Mi MIX 2. Starck is a world-famous designer and has worked on everything from Steve Jobs’ yacht to furniture and more. Starck also designed the first Mi MIX, which was a viral sensation and kicked off the bezel-less trend we see taking over the market today.

And now, Xiaomi is back again with another beautiful device. A common theme in the video is Jade, the ornamental rock that is heavily featured in Asian art. Xiaomi is using a unibody ceramic casing for the Mi MIX 2 to give it the cool, calm, quiet feeling akin to Jade. Last year’s Mi MIX featured a similar ceramic design, but the Mi MIX 2 improves on that design by featuring a full ceramic unibody casing.

One of the key points that Starck and Jun push in the video is perfection. Xiaomi took the time and effort to make what it thinks is the perfect device. According to them, it has the perfect body, a perfect aspect ratio, and removing something as small as a 0.1 mm seam makes all the difference. “It’s just magic.”

We recently spent some hands-on time with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2. We noted in our initial hands-on article that Xiaomi’s decision to shrink the size of the display and overall footprint made it easier to handle. Due to the smaller size, the phone lacks a headphone jack and the battery size drops from 4,400 mAh in last year’s Mi MIX to 3,400 mAh this year. Under the hood, the Mi MIX 2 has a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and 64, 128, or 256 GB of RAM.
